Horse FairJoin the fun as The Kittitas County Horse Fair exhibits and competition kicks-off the annual Kittitas County Fair August 14, 2008. There’ll be plenty to see and do at this year’s Horse Fair. Watch 4H kids compete in numerous equine events. Enjoy refreshments at the Friends of the Kittitas County Fair Grounds Foundation’s booth, the 4H booth, and Young Life’s Espresso Stand.

The Kittitas County Horse Fair is supported by the generous contributions of University Auto, Luft Trailer Sales, Liberty Farm & Lawn, LTD., Ellensburg Chevrolet, and Old Mill Country Store.

Awards

Barkley Perpetual Award
The Jo and Vern Barkley Perpetual Award is presented to the winner of a ride-off between first and second place blue ribbon ride in each age group of the Western Equitation class (six riders, two from senior, intermediate, and junior categories). A significant pattern is required for this class. The perpetual trophy is displayed in the trophy case at the Kittitas County Courthouse. The winner receives a keeper trophy.

Horse FairHigh Point Jumping Trophy
The trophy is sponsored by the Z X Bar Ranch. It is awarded to the high point jumper of the Kittitas County Horse fair. The winner keeps the trophy for one year and receives a keeper trophy.

Western Games Trophies
These trophies and buckles are awarded in the four age divisions (Senior, Intermediate, Junior and Novice) to horse project members who accumulate the highest points in Showmanship. English or Western, Equitation, and their highest county horse judging placing. One-third of the point value is given to each discipline. Tiebreaker is the Showmanship score. High Point trophies sponsored by Kim and Darrel Hendrickson. Belt buckles for Novice, Junior and Intermediate High Point winners sponsored by Chamber Rodeo Cowboys. Belt buckle for High Point winner sponsored by Liberty Farm and Lawn. Belt buckles for Novice Walk/Trot only winner sponsored by Puget Sound Energy.

High Point Trail Trophy
This award is sponsored by the Kittitas County Horse Leader’s Committee and is given for the best overall score on the Trail Course. A keeper trophy is also awarded.

Judging Trophy
The individual who receives the highest scores in all three county horse judging contests wins this award. The recipient also receives a keeper trophy. This award is sponsored by Frank Costello.

Taylor Templin Sportsmanship Award
The award is given to the horse 4-H member who exhibits a courteous, cheerful, helpful, and kind attitude toward other 4-H members, parents and leaders at all times during the Kittitas County Horse Fair. Horse 4-H members vote at the Horse Fair awards ceremony. The award is determined from year-to-year. A gift certificate of $10.00 is sponsored by the Kittitas County 4-H Horse Leader’s Committee, and a traveling trophy awarded in memory of Taylor Elizabeth Templin is sponsored by the Brownlee Family.

Taylor was a 4-H member who always showed great sportsmanship and a kind and helpful attitude. She is greatly missed by the 4-H community and all who knew and loved her.

Herdsmanship Trophy
Sponsored by Bits and Buckles 4-H Club, this award is given to the club who gains the most points in Herdsmanship during the Kittitas County Horse Fair. The perpetual trophy is displayed in the trophy case at the Kittitas County Courthouse.

Driving Reinsmanship Trophy
The trophy, sponsored by Cheryl Paul, Loraine Varriano and the Garland Family, is given to the 4-H member with the highest points in driving. Points accumulated from the Spring Leader Show Pony Reinsmanship Class, Summer Leader’s Show Pony Showmanship Class and Reinsmanship Class and the Kittitas County Horse Fair Reinsmanship Class. All levels of 4-H members are eligible to receive this award. A keeper plaque is also given.

Best Costume Award
The award is earned by the 4-H member with the best overall costume. It is a cash award sponsored by Carol and Dough Evenson.

Barn Decoration Awards
The award is sponsored by The Windbreak Texaco. A rosette ribbon and a cash award of $15.00 are given to the horse club with the best barn decorations; a rosette ribbon and $10.00 award is given to the second place club; and, a $5.00 award is given to the third place club.

Age Division – Western Games Awards
Plaques are sponsored by the Kittitas County 4-H Horse Committee, and are awarded to the best overall combined times in Barrels, Poles, Key Race, Figure 8 Race, and Flag Race in each Age Division (Novice, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior).

High Point Trophy
The award is presented to the 4-H member that accumulates the greatest number of points at the Spring & Summer Leaders’ Shows and the Kittitas County Horse Fair. Pony and handler/rider must be the same. Points are awarded in the following classes: Pleasure Driving, English or Western Equitation, English or Western Pleasure, Showmanship and Barrel Racing. Keeper trophy will be given to the winner at the Horse Fair awards ceremony. A perpetual plaque listing annual winners and their photos will be kept on display in the Kittitas County Courthouse. The award is sponsored by The Clark Family Welsh Pony Farm.

Fred M. Derrick Memorial
The “Fred M. Derrick Memorial Award” is given to the Grand Champion in the horse Showmanship Contest. The first and second place winners in Senior, Intermediate and Junior classes compete for this award. The trophy, sponsored by the Derrick and McDonald Families, remains on display in the trophy case at the Kittitas County Courthouse. The winner receives a keeper trophy.

All-Around Showmanship
The Senior, Intermediate and Junior winners in Beef, Sheep, Swine, Goat, and Horse are eligible to compete in the All-Around Showmanship Championship. The person selected as All-Around Champion will receive a permanent trophy and one year’s possession of a rotating trophy. Both awards are sponsored by the Kittitas County Fair Board. The champion of each age division will receive a trophy sponsored by Joe Shannon and Country Companies Insurance. All-Around Showmanship competition is held on Labor Day, September 1, 2008.

Mark Patterson Perpetual Award
The award is earned by the 4-H horse project member who accumulates the highest scores in Showmanship, Western Equitation, English Equitation, Trail, and horse judging held in the county in 2008. In the event of a tie, the trophy is warded to the individual with the higher score in showmanship. The winner keeps the trophy for one year. The award is sponsored by Mark Patterson.

English Classic
The trophy, sponsored by Dennis and Nancy Page, is awarded for excellence in English Horsemanship. The top two blue ribbon riders in each age category (Senior, Intermediate, and Junior) will compete in a ride-off for this award. The winner keeps the trophy for one year, and also receives a keeper trophy.

Most Improved $10 Cash Award
Sponsored by Peg Rowbotham, this cash prize is awarded to a 4-H Project member who meets all the criteria to compete in the Kittitas County Horse Fair and, who through the current 4-H year: 1) shows enthusiasm and growth as an individual; 2) is cooperative in club and county activities; and, 3) shows much growth in horsemanship without the aid of professional help other than the 4-H sponsored clinics and training days.
